A Wet Hot Oily Summer

We all know the normal safety tips for summer

  • Drink plenty of water – stay hydrated
  • Use sunscreen
  • Keep your skin healthy with lotions ….

But did you know it’s just as or maybe more important to make sure you use healthy products to do this!?

Did you know those lotions can have harmful chemicals in them that can do more damage than good?!

In my journey to try to eliminate unnecessary chemicals from my life I found out that sunscreen, for instance, has all kinds of gross stuff in it.  Y’all I was a swimmer, instructor or coach for a third of my life!  Do you know how much time I have spent putting nasty and synthetic chemicals on my skin?!  Is the protection from gross chemicals worth the trade off?  We now have many different companies that offer healthy options and I have some great suggestions in the pipeline for you.

Over the course of July I’m going to look at the different products we use on our skin to keep us healthy in the summer.  This everything from sunscreen to bug spray to the personal care products we use when we get out of the sun.

I remember When I finally made the switch to more natural products on my skin.  My skin never felt better!  That greasy sticky feeling you get with synthetic sunscreens just vanished never to be felt again!  Even if I wanted to risk the danger and sit out for a tan I didn’t need to use anything else, my skin took care of  that… it just did what it was made to do … protect me from the sun by tanning.  (Of course I can’t say that you should sit in the sun without sunscreen, that is a personal choice and one you should make as an educated decision.

Once I was married and gained my three beautiful girls, I paid even closer attention to what was in the products we used as a family.  I made sure they had good sunscreen, body wash, shampoo/conditioner… etc … etc… (I’ll go over those things in a separate post) I just wanted to make sure they didn’t grow up with some of the harmful chemicals now that we are aware they can do damage, especially on a hormonal level.

Then I had my son!  I wanted to make sure he grew up with harmful chemicals never touching his skin!  That’s why he uses the Young Living Seedlings line exclusively.  This line is plant based and ethically sourced.  It is hypoallergenic, non-greasy, Dermatologist tested (yay!), formulated without harsh chemicals and that makes it worry free!  Look, they had me from the get go.  This is the only product we use on Royce.  Do you want to know my favorite part of this line?  It doesn’t replace the moisture his body already makes for him!  Do you know what that means?  It means we hardly ever find him with dry skin.  Just a tiny about most nights is part of his night time routine because it’s made with calming, relaxing and baby safe essential oils!  I am convinced it’s his favorite part of the night … even over kisses!

Join me over the next month as we look at why these things can be bad for not only your skin but your whole body.
